Other requirements | A motivation letter must be added to your application. Guidelines for statement of purposeGeneral guidelines: Your statement of purpose shouldn’t be longer than 600 words. It should be coherent and well-structured, clear and easy-to-follow. Take care of your grammar! Use automatic spelling and grammar check! When you have finished writing your statement of purpose give it to one of your friends and ask him/her to evaluate your product. If s/he doesn’t understand something exactly, how would other readers do? Structure: In the first paragraph introduce yourself and highlight those academic facts that members of application committee should really know about you. If you have any experience in working for NGOs you can write about it here. In the next one or two paragraphs you should write something about if you have studied anything on ethnic and minority relations or studies. You might have been specialized in Ethnic or Minority Studies during your undergraduate years or maybe you have just visited one or two courses on minorities or you might have just read a book on ethnic affairs, it doesn’t matter. Write us why you are engaged to these topics and why you would like to spend two more years studying it. In the next two or three paragraphs you have to write about your research plan. Don’t worry, it doesn’t mean that you have to write your MA-thesis based on these ideas. You can change your mind during the semesters. We are just curious about how you would design an own research, what the research topic and the research question are, which theoretical frameworks you would use etc. Be problem-oriented and justify why your topic is more than interesting to being researched. At the end close your proposal with one or two sentences as closing remarks. Don’t forget, you have only 600 words to convince the committee that you would be an appropriate student for studying in the program. Take this chance! Sometimes students ask if they could be a bit personal in their motivation letter. For example, if someone belongs to a minority group whether s/he should share this fact and use this as a justification why s/he would like to be admitted to the program. Well, you can turn your voice into a bit more personal but don’t forget that we are interested mainly in your academic drives. Don’t reduce your voice only to your personal side! Good luck!
